So we saw Scrabbel and a little bit of Goh Nakamura at ican last night. It is a really cozy venue on Mission and 9th, with not too shabby acoustics (although AV could be improved by repositioning the speakers). Scrabbel--Hellen and Sara played the strings beautifully (not out of tune!), and I think the music really made something inside of me melt a little. It's nostalgic and contemplative, with a little folk flavor, and happy tunes. Especially when the xylophone is played--ding ding ding ding ding!
The strings added another dimension of lushness to the already dense instrumentation, and are irreplaceable. No other instruments can simulate the phenomena of memory quite so well. I think without singing, they really sang.
